HPU ECONOMICS PROFESSORS PRESENT AT CONFERENCE EXPLORING THE RISING TIDE OF ANTI-GLOBALIZATION

In August 2023, an intellectually stimulating conference called the “Analysis of the Trend of Anti-Globalization from the Perspective of Austrian Economics" was held at Waterfront Plaza, in coordination with HPU Associate Professor Ken Schoolland, M.S.F.S., and HPU Director for the Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Education Gerard Dericks, Ph.D. Organized by Li Zhao Schoolland for prominent Chinese and U.S. economics scholars, the conference was a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of the contemporary challenges facing globalization.

Austrian Economics, with its emphasis on individual choice, entrepreneurship, and market dynamics, offers a unique perspective on the complex issue of globalization. This economic school of thought, founded by thinkers like Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek, had long been a champion of free markets and limited government intervention.

At the conference, esteemed Austrian Economics scholars shared their insights into the challenges and opportunities presented by the anti-globalization trend. The conference featured a range of activities that fostered discussion and the exchange of ideas that included an international experts’ roundtable, entrepreneur panels, presentations by American scholars, company visits, and a city tour around Oahu.

Schoolland and Dericks both presented in the international experts’ roundtable. Schoolland’s presentation was titled “Migration Control: That Peculiar Institution,” and Dericks’ presentation was titled “The Role of Banking in the Economy: New Empirical Evidence.”
