Sounds Like Home is described by Schumacker and McCreary as a musical tapestry that will weave strands of nostalgia and reminiscence with dissonant chords of strife and struggle. Expect to hear some old favorites and new music that will inspire and captivate, featuring music from Hawai‘i, Venezuela, South Africa, Lebanon, the Philippines, Ireland, two world premieres, and more. The concert ends with a rousing grand finale for combined choirs, soloists, and orchestra.
HPU undergraduate student Yusuf Alnajjar is a sophomore studying education, and is a member of the International Vocal Ensemble and Chorale. He recently shared that he is excited to be singing in Spanish, Arabic, and ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi with the International Vocal Ensemble.
"Sounds Like Home will showcase pieces from all over the world, each of which share a story and perspective to explore this year’s theme of refuge," Alnajjar said. "With all the conflict going on in the world there are a few pieces that I’m personally attached to as a Middle Eastern immigrant myself and son of Palestinian refugees. We have an opportunity to come together and collectively sing using a universal language to bring people together, tell stories, find comfort and heal. It’s gonna be a good one!"
HPU’s International Vocal Ensemble, Chorale, and Chamber Orchestra are known for their engaging performances, and this fall concert promises to be no exception. HPU students are talented and dedicated, and their passion for music will shine brightly on stage.
The concert offers free admission, making it accessible to all. Additionally, there will be a calabash offering, allowing attendees to contribute to the continued success of these talented students and their musical journey at HPU.
