The HPU School of Nursing celebrated the achievements of its spring 2023 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students at their annual pinning ceremony held on May 6, 2023, at the Ala Moana Hotel. A total of 72 students participated in the nursing tradition this year.
The HPU Student Nurses Association (SNA) executive board and faculty coordinated the event. The pinning ceremony signifies the passage of hard-working students into the profession of nursing.
HPU School of Nursing Dean Edna Magpantay-Monroe, Ed.D., APRN, CMDCP, presented a greeting from the University and the School of Nursing. She said that, “kuleana, pono and aloha are the foundation of who you are, a graduate of HPU School of Nursing. Be a proud alumnus and give back by helping another peer succeed in being a nurse. Be authentic in your day-to-day presence with your patients, their families and co-workers.”
Dean Magpantay-Monroe holds the class gift of a paddle made of monkey pod wood.
There were 10 awards given to students, including the prestigious Daisy award. This year’s recipient of the Daisy award for Extraordinary Nursing Student was Jhon Kevin Hazel Manuel. Manuel was described in her nomination as someone who “demonstrates strong compassionate skills, who is hardworking, communicates effectively and always has a smile on her face.”
There were six awards given to faculty, including the Daisy award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty. This year’s recipient of the Daisy award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty was Hazel Downing, RN, Ed.D.
Students were given a lei with their pins by their selected pinners (families, faculty or friend) while on stage, and they also created a yearbook-type memorabilia. The class gift of a paddle made of monkey pod wood was signed by all students and presented to Dean Magpantay-Monroe.
During the pining ceremony, nursing student Lili Younce graced the audience with an uplifiting song while playing the ukulele, and later, nursing student Bryan Allen lead the SNA mission and shared that “after years of hard work, we have reached the next leg in our journey. The honored title of nurse is almost ours!”
