HPU Professor and Program Director of Data Science, Chong Ho “Alex” Yu, recently co-authored an article titled “How North American Immigrant Churches Can Support Congregants with Severe Chronic Diseases,” published in the journal Pastoral Psychology.

Yu's article explores the unique struggles that immigrants in North America face when dealing with chronic illnesses, including navigating healthcare systems, legal challenges, financial strains, and cultural differences. It highlights how immigrant churches can be a source of much-needed support, not only providing practical help but also fostering a sense of community and offering spiritual care.
The study presents a model that churches can adopt to better assist members with chronic illnesses. This includes helping with daily tasks, offering guidance on medical and legal matters, and creating a nurturing spiritual environment. The research stresses the importance of faith communities stepping up to address the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of these individuals, especially when other systems may fall short.
Yu is a three-time recipient of the SAS Faculty Scholarship (2016 SAS Global Forum, 2017 SAS Global Forum, and 2017 Western Users of SAS Software Conference) and was honored with the Distinguished SAS Educator Award in 2021. His research interests span emerging data science methods, exploratory data analysis, and the philosophical aspects of research methodologies. He is also involved in cross-cultural studies in STEM education, working with international assessments like PISA, PIAAC, and TIMSS.
