The Pacific Club is a renowned private club located in Honolulu with over 1,300 members and more than 120 staff. Over 5,000 U.S. private clubs operate for profit, generating over $30 billion in revenue yearly, which operates on membership. It is a good combination of recreation and leisure, and many clubs offer food and beverage to its members and organize events for its members.
HPU’s “special event and food and beverage management class” in the College of Business recently visited The Pacific Club on April 9, 2024. Assistant General Manager Amy Damon, CCM, welcomed the HPU students. She took the students through the property, sharing details about the club management focused on F&B and the events.
HPU students toured the outdoor facilities that includes paddleball courts, gym, and a swimming pool .
Students met several people along the way, including the athletic director, F&B director, head chef, and bar manager during the tour. They shared words of wisdom with HPU students about the club and its management. Later, they got to talk with General Manager Michael Ako, who shared his career journey with the students. HPU students observed the management side of the club, especially focused on F&B, and events. Apart from that, students got several career-related insights from the experience team of The Pacific Club.
Damon shared that students could work their way up in their career with experience. Nicole shared that one needs to love the hospitality profession to work on it, and always be open to feedback. Similarly, Ako shared that club management is more close-knit than the hotel industry, and he fell in love with club management. He also mentioned that one needs to find fulfillment in the job, and there might be a lot of opportunities in Condo Management in Hawai’i.
Most of the students were visiting the Club for the first time, so they were delighted by the experience. The Pacific Club family inspired the students. Students could see what they learned in their hands-on, practical coursework has a real-world context.
