Teaching Interests/Research:
Teaching is the primary function of faculty at Hawai`i Pacific University, and I have taught more than 20 different courses at HPU, covering a wide range of topics in chemistry and environmental science. The courses related to energy and the built environment are closest to my personal and professional interests. In 2006, HPU became the first educational provider based in Hawai`i (and the 16th in the U.S.A.) to be approved by the North American Board of Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) to offer an entry-level photovoltaic system design course based on the NABCEP Entry-Level Certificate of Knowledge. This course (ENVS 3200 Photovoltaic Systems Design) regularly provides students, including adults seeking a new career, with training that often translates into employment opportunities in the solar industry. I apply a similar emphasis on technical skills in other courses, such as ENVS 4000/1 Methods of Environmental Science (lecture and laboratory). Students use the same software and techniques that building industry professionals use.
