Health and Wellness
The Office of Student Engagement offers students diverse and exciting opportunities to pursue multidimensional health and wellness at HPU.
Overlooking the harbor with gorgeous sunrise and sunset views and featuring pool (billiards), ping-pong, foosball, and air hockey tables, plus a jukebox and all kinds of board games, Sharky’s Cove is the place to go for socializing and having fun—when you’re not relaxing on the comfy couches and enjoying the warm ocean breeze, that is!
Sharky’s Cove is accessible to all students with student ID between the hours of 8am-10pm daily. In addition, there is a Student Activities Ambassador present to help students check out gaming materials between 2pm-8pm Monday-Friday.
Every night from Monday-Thursday, we host a small activity in Sharky’s Cove to unwind after classes. Whether this be Taco and Trivia Tuesday, a hands-on activity from our DIY Wednesday series, a Sunset Yoga session, or any one of an endless number of possibilities, there’s always something to do in Sharky’s Cove! Keep up with us on Instagram @hpustudentactivities, or just drop by Sharky’s Cove after 5pm to see what’s happening!
Your HPU student ID is required in order to check into our evening events in Sharky’s Cove.
Health and Wellness encompasses more than just staying physically active. At HPU, we follow the framework of the seven dimensions of wellness: Physical, Social, Emotional, Spiritual, Cultural, Environmental, and Occupational.
Our Yin-Yang Wellness Weekends program gives students balanced options for pursuing well-rounded, multidimensional wellness. Each weekend, students can sign up for multiple off-campus health and wellness activities. We offer one “Yin” event—such as a museum tour, community volunteer project, or yoga class—and one “Yang” event, such as surfing, canoeing, or paddleboarding, for students to stay healthy and well in every sense.
These off-campus activities are led by Student Activities Ambassadors and require students to sign up in advance. Your HPU student ID is required to register and attend our Wellness Weekend activities.
Sharky's Swells
Sharky's Swells is the name of our in-house Student Activities newsletter full of upcoming events around campus for students to attend. Released weekly on Fridays by 5pm, you'll receive a notification straight to your student email inbox including details of how to register, if necessary. Our most popular activities often sell out within minutes of Sharky's Swells being sent, so competition is fierce!
If you are a student organization or HPU department wishing to feature an event in Sharky's Swells, please contact us at studentlife@hpu.edu.
Frequently Asked Questions
Since we have a limited number of spots at each event, it’s important to us that those who sign up and reserve a spot do indeed attend the event—otherwise, that spot is wasted when it could have gone to another student. We charge a ticket fee as an extra incentive/commitment to attending the event you sign up for; we know students who are willing to pay for a $20 ticket, for example, have shown an extra level of commitment to attending the event, which helps us avoid any unnecessarily empty seats.
The price of tickets varies for each event between $5 on the low end and $25 on the high end. This fee is determined based on the cost of each event. For instance, a surfing lesson costs $100/person as the standard market price. We charge $20 per student who signs up—which means 80% off for HPU students! Many events are cheaper than that, and thus our tickets for HPU students will be similarly less expensive. The cost of our tickets is proportional to the price we pay for booking out the event ahead of time.
Our top priority is making sure all students have a fair chance to attend our events. Spots are limited and always in high demand, and we want to ensure that students who purchase a ticket and reserve a seat do indeed show up to the event. For this reason, we are no longer offering refunds as of August 28, 2023.
Emergency situations and other special circumstances will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. If you purchased a ticket but can no longer attend an event, we encourage you to reach out to us at studentlife@hpu.edu to let us know so that we can re-open your spot to other students. Students who repeatedly purchase tickets without attending may have their participation privileges suspended for the remainder of the semester.
We do not have a waitlist for our events, but if additional tickets become available, we will share that information on our Instagram. Make sure to follow us @hpustudentactivities to stay on the cutting edge of student activities news!
