Getting Started

1. Check Out Your Options!

Browse our website to see what interests you. There are options all over the world with classes available for all majors and programs ranging from traditional university settings, field-based programs, internships, and multi-country adventures. We offer two types of programs:

  • Partner Schools where students can use financial Aid and HPU Scholarships.
  • Affiliated Programs that offer a wide variety of program types. Students can use Federal Financial Aid.

To get a better and more visual understanding of the different schools and programs we compiled a showcase for your review. You can access the Virtual Showcase through the online library or through this link

  • The virtual showcase provides you with links to short videos on our partner schools and programs or even videos on student experiences.
  • Please note that you can only access the spreadsheet once you're logged into you @my.hpu.edu gmail account.

2. Join Our Mailing List!

Once you're familiar with your endless study abroad opportunities, your next step is to join our mailing list. By doing so, you will receive important updates on events, deadlines, or application procedures. You won't miss anything study abroad related. Please note, that we won't share any of your information with others than our office.

3. Work Towards Meeting the Requirements!

It's never too early to get started! Even if you don't think you'll study abroad until later, you can make sure to keep your GPA up and start taking languages classes if you want to go to a country with a language requirement.

4. Come Talk to Us!

The sooner the better! Make an appointment as soon as you start thinking about studying abroad. We will talk about your options, what programs might be good for you, and how to fit studying abroad into your degree plan. For example, saving your Global Diversity gen-ed for Study Abroad is a great way to fill a requirement abroad.

5. Start Thinking About Scholarships and FinAid!

Some scholarships have early application deadlines, so you will want to check out our scholarships page and work with our office so that you can apply for scholarships to study abroad. You will also want to meet with your financial aid counselor to understand what aid you can use abroad.

6. Apply!

You will need to apply to study abroad through HPU as well as apply to your host university or program. Be sure to keep the deadlines in mind, and when you meet with your study abroad advisor they will work with you on the application process.

7. Apply for Visa!

The visa process is different for every country, so you will want to check the website of the Consulate for the country you are going to. You will also need a valid passport to travel internationally. Passport Information.

8. Get Prepared!

Renew your passport if necessary, register for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Programreview the requirements for entering your host country and learn about where you're headed. You can contact students who have studied there previously, look at program evaluations from past students, and prepare a budget for your time abroad. You will also want to think about how you will get money and cell phone service in your host country. There will also be a mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation where you can learn all about what it's like to be abroad, get some practical advice from past students, and meet other students who have studied in your host country.
